' I was floating near the middle of an underwater arena, still about 10 metres from the bottom and twenty metres from the wreck. About 15 divers swum over it, popping in and out of doorways, bubbles escaping through rusted hatches giving away their whereabouts. I spent some time looking around and a few minutes standing on my head and looking at everything upside-down which was fun, and quite difficult as my buoyancy constantly tried to flip me over. John told me I had nitrogen narcosis, which is caused by nitrogen building up in your body and can make you feel and act as though you are drunk.
Jenny, one of the dive masters on the island was notorious for getting ‘narked’ really badly. One of the scientists, an unpopular chap called Phil had a crush on her. He had a big beard and talked about Warhammer incessantly. She wasn’t even slightly interested in him and would become irritable because he would often just stand and stare at her. On her birthday she was paired with him on a dive and she became very narcosed at about 35 metres. She decided to take all her clothes off which meant she had to take her tank and weights off first. This can be very dangerous because if you drop your kit you can’t breathe and you shoot to the surface without the counterweight.
He was particularly attentive as she swum about naked, unaware of what she was doing. They made a safety stop at 3 metres; the reduced pressure allowing much of the excess nitrogen to leave her body and her face to turn bright red.'
